Proenza Schouler's SS 2011 collection was inspired from the Indian festival "Holi" and here is what the designers spoke about their inspiration -"We arrived the day after the festival (Holi). It was pure coincidence, and we saw all this colour and powder everywhere: all the colours were faded neon and powdery. When we’re inspired by something, it comes out in a very abstract, subtle way. In this instance, it was about colour, especially in the countryside, where we saw desert-like landscapes and women in fluorescent clothes tending to the land. They seemed to pop and radiate light. We had a lot of black this season, but these colours felt right to us. That’s where the electric neons came from. From sketchbook to catwalk, everything’s a long process and gets filtered, but the essential idea of using saturated colours came from rural India. Next, we want to go to Varanasi. That’s on our list of places to visit."
HONESTLY! IF THEY HAD ARRIVED ON THE DAY OF HOLI CELEBRATIONS, THEY WOULD HAVE FELT DISGUSTED AND BOOKED A RETURN FLIGHT ON THE VERY SAME DAY!!

After 48-hours of sleeplessness, I woke up late this afternoon... tired and exhausted with body temperature running high. My room is in a complete mess and have the Himalayan task to complete other submissions for mid-semester examination. I went down to buy some biscuits and juice for breakfast when a bunch of ‘sardars’ (the entire family – parents, uncles, brothers and sisters) clad in ugly shades of all possible colours in a colour palette came running towards me with colour-clad-hands. I initially tried to duck down when they tried to throw colour water and powder on me. The big fat ass mother is encouraging her children to pour water on me! Bloody! I yelled at them ‘madarchod... mat kar’ (motherfuckers... don’t do it). They were shocked as though I just stopped them from doing a noble task. One of the elderly man replied to me saying, ‘Why are you getting angry? We are just playing holi’. I walked back to my room without replying.
Yes friends, I am culturally invaded. Being a Chennaiite who later moved to Delhi, the whole concept of men drenching women in colour water and women tearing men’s t-shirt is still weird and totally bizarre. I have no idea why exactly should I not defend myself from a random bunch of strangers doing what-so-ever to me!
March 8th 2012, marks Holi celebrations in New Delhi when dirty drunken men take bangh and get a chance to harass girls on a day which also marks Women's day celebrations globally!! Holi, is a Hindu festival celebrated all across India except the Southern parts. Holi is hypocrisy. Men take bangh, people throw colours on any random person and women tear men’s t-shirts. I tried playing Holy last year when I was forced to do so. Leave the harmful chemicals in the colours apart, people break eggs on each other, apply grease, mud, cow dung and every other form of shit. Playing holi was still in a way 'FUN'. But what happens after the celebrations is total FUCK, YUCK and EWWWW! The bloody colour is all over your ears, nose, eyes, palms and are ought to stay for another fortnight or a month. And all this nonsense doesn’t happen on the day of Holi, but starts a week prior to the festiva! I have no idea behind the religious motivation to celebrate such a hideous festival. The festival is supposed to spread happiness and bring colours in your life and that is exactly what holi doesn’t seem to do! It does not bring any new friendship or happiness like it’s said, but beware, there are high chances that you might end up having a brawl with strangers in road or even friends for that matter, chances are high that people might throw the harmful colours and fuck up your favourite t-shirt your girl friend gifted you last valentine’s day (Just like the ones below).
The Shiv Sena, Ram Sena, BJP and every other ‘Godly’ Sena who seem to be the cultural dictators of the nation hunt and chase down couples on Valentine’s day. Being with someone you love, holding hands, exchanging gifts and a gentle kiss - is it that bad or worse than playing Holi?
It’s hilarious how the very same people praise the sweet love of Krishna-Radha when the former play holi. Bloody conservative religious hypocrites!
I don't find much of difference between the two images, while the first one is much more ridiculous!

Purushu I've been dying to say what you just said, Holi stands for hooliganism. In the name of Holi crazy people seize the chance to assualt you with water balloons that hurt and chemical induced colour water that cause allergies. It's fun if you are a kid, you enjoy to your hearts content with all your kid friends. If you are a teenager or grown up adult, you leave way for anti social elements to attack and get their way with you.
Laughed so hard when I read "HONESTLY! IF THEY HAD ARRIVED ON THE DAY OF HOLI CELEBRATIONS, THEY WOULD HAVE FELT DISGUSTED AND BOOKED A RETURN FLIGHT ON THE VERY SAME DAY!!" So damn funny!
Playing Holi is okay ONLY with natural gulal and clean water.
True Laveena!
I hope you had a safe and sound festival :)
Cheers,
Purushu
